RIM releases BBM 6 with app integration

Research in Motion (RIM) has announced the Blackberry Messenger 6.0, a significant update that takes one of the smartphone’s most popular apps and turns it from being just an instant messaging app into a social platform for other applications. This spring, RIM showed some of the capabilities of the new BBM at the BlackBerry World, and while it may not cause so much excitement for developers to make BlackBerry apps, it sure will benefit those who do.

The company said that the BBM service has over 45 million users, and it still activates 2 million new accounts each month. RIM said that 70 percent of BBM users use it every day and send more than 100 billion messages per month. This means that BBM is one of the world’s most popular services.

“BBM 6 marks the beginning of an even greater social experience for BlackBerry smartphone users,” said Research in Motion BBM Platform and Integrated Services Vice President Alistair Mitchell. “It also represents an incredible opportunity for developers to leverage the viral nature of the BBM service and we have already begun working with various developer partners who will be bringing their BBM connected apps to BlackBerry App World this week, offering users highly engaging app experiences.”

BBM-integrated applications include Score Mobile, FourSquare, Huffington Post app and Wikitude, along with other apps that can be found in the BlackBerry App World.

Toshiba Qosmio F750 glasses-free 3D laptop,review and price

Toshiba is rapidly increasing their growth in the field of 3D gears and glasses-free 3D displays. Toshiba just unveiled what it claims is the world's first glasses-free 3D laptop, the Qosmio F750. It's a heavy-set beast dedicated to gaming and movies, with a 15.6-inch Full HD lenticular screen that can display 2D and 3D simultaneously in separate windows. It also rocks an HD webcam that follows your movements and adjusts the 3D effect accordingly, so you can peek at the that lovely third dimension from almost any angle you like. Innovative stuff indeed, but we were underwhelmed when we caught a glimpse of Toshiba's concept model back in January.

The Toshiba Qosmio F750 has a lenticular lens sheet display which makes slightly different images to be seen by the left and the right eye, thus creating the 3D effect. The laptop also has an HD webcam which further enhances the 3D formation.

It runs on a high performance Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge processor, comes packed with a 640GB hard drive, 6GB DDR3 RAM, nVidia GeForce 540M graphics, a Blu-ry XL optical drive, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port. It has a screen size of 15.6 inches and comes in dimensions of 380.55 x 254 x 37.6 mm.

It is however not perfect for 3D gameplays. As it requires you to sit without any movement to watch 3D graphics, it will not be ideal for displaying 3D graphics for gaming because gamers are used to shaking their heads and body during gaming!

The Qosmio F750 will be available from August 2011, and it’ll likely be priced around $2,100 USD.

Samsung Galaxy S II Could Also Be Sprint Bound

Ok, we agree that the image here is not all that clear, but the body of the phone, its noticeably jarring rear cover, and somewhat inverted base are blabbermouth signs of Samsung’s Galaxy S II model.

This image is one of the images that show Sprint marking on the handset. The image of the handset also clearly displays the 8 megapixel camera of the handset, which also is a major highlight for the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Though, this model is an unofficial model and is pretty much like the unlocked device that we saw, everything else here is different enough suggesting that Samsung will be following the same game plan for their Galaxy S series, which is launching similar, but not all that same products for different carriers.

For instance, this particular device is curved than the unlocked variant of the handset that we saw, from the bends of its body to the housing of camera and the volume rocker given on the left hand side seems to be a lot lumpier metallic component, than Samsung’s Galaxy S II’s skinny dark plastic strip.

Though, we haven’t got the confirmed details for the handset, but its pretty sure that Samsung will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S II, especially considering the huge success that the device is getting in Europe.

Microsoft releases Mango SDK Beta update for developers

Windows Phone developers are getting one step closer to the fresh, fruity tang of Mango's RTM build with a newly released SDK update. The one month-in-the-making "Beta 2 Refresh" tweaks the previously issued Windows Phone SDK 7.1 and is available now for download, packing an improved profiler, locked application platform APIs, an emulator-based screen cap feature for your apps and a "peek at the Marketplace Test Kit." Microsoft's also thrown devs an extra bonus and will be pushing an OS update, Build 7712, to manually upgraded Mango phones. Sounds sweet, but it's too bad this hot number won't be ready in time for your app-building, beta hands.

SanDisk offers their Ultra SSD lineup for retail consumers

Previously SanDisk offered its Ultra SSD to the business sector, but on Tuesday the company revealed that it’s now offering the drive to consumers. Unfortunately, it’s not packed with the SandForce SF-2200 controller or a SATA 6 Gbps interface, so don’t expect blazing fast speeds in the 500 MB/s realm. But considering its price, the Ultra SSD offers a cheap way to replace the standard HDD and boost performance without having to sell body parts on the black market.

“Replacing a computer’s hard disk drive with the SanDisk Ultra SSD is more cost effective than buying a new PC,” said Kent Perry, director, product marketing, SanDisk. “Our new SSD delivers greater speed and reliability than a hard disk drive at an affordable price.”

According to the specs, the 2.5-inch Ultra SSD features sustained sequential read speeds up to 280 MB/s and write speeds up to 270 MB/s. SanDisk claims that the 60 GB Ultra SSD can withstand at least 40 terabytes of data written to it over lifetime, while the 120 GB and 240 GB drives can withstand at least 80 terabytes and 120 terabytes of data written, respectively.

The SanDisk Ultra SSD is now available here in the States over on Newegg, costing $129.99 for the 60 GB model, $219.99 for the 120 GB model and a meatier $449.99 for the 240 GB model (although currently the 120 GB model is the only one listed). Additional retailers are expected to be revealed shortly.
