A new Hi-Fi without an iPod dock? What were the engineers behind the Panasonic SC-HC15 thinking? That people could live with MP3 CDs and USB sticks filled with tunes as long as the system looks good enough? We tested that theory out.

Sound

First of all – it sounds good. Whatever voodoo that goes on in the name of the Aero Stream Port, it works well. You get a rich, robust bass from the 10W speakers when the volume is at normal levels – and it really pounds as your crank it higher.

The sound distorts a bit at very low-levels – although that can only be expected. You should probably stop worrying about your neighbours and crank it up, anyway.

Design
It’s also pretty beautiful. It’s piano-black finish and slender design (just 69mm thick) make it an ideal shelf-sitter. The thin profile and sleek design mean that it’s really unobtrusive – unlike bigger CD systems.

The front even mechanically slides open in a very-futuristic-for-1990 kind of way. The display is equally bachelor-tastic – a white on black.

Connectivity

The device plays normal CDs, MP3 CDs and USB sticks – so it’s not totally old tech. We’re not entirely sure who still uses MP3 CDs, but it’ll be great for the less-tech savvy generation.

Plug an iPhone into the USB dock and it won’t work, however – a big disappointment for today’s Apple generation. We still can’t get past the question – who downloads music onto USB sticks to play? If you do, please write in. Our thoughts are that a dock with a built-in mini-jack cable would have been more useful.

Conclusion

The HC15 sounds good, and its bachelor-friendly 90′s design is still in style. Unfortunately, the technology also feels a bit 1990′s. This means that today’s tapping and sliding iOS generation may find it a bit retro, in the “oh wait, this Sega Megadrive isn’t very good anymore” kind of way. Tech-heads should move on.

If you’re looking for a device for a less tech-aware consumer, the Panasonic sounds good, and is so simple, elegant and small, it won’t look out of place anywhere.

LG Introduces the Optimus Black

LG was late entering the smartphone market with a competitive flagship handset, but it looks like the company is launching a winner with the Optimus Black.

The Optimus Black looks rather like much of its competition, combining the black-slab touchscreen design with a candybar form-factor. With this device, however, LG has some hidden features up its sleeve, which might give it a slight edge over the competition.

Its main selling point is its screen, which features a new technology called the Nova Display. LG’s NOVA technology is designed to give a consistently clear display, and it crucially uses significantly less power in everyday use to rival OLED panels. Furthermore, LG is boasting that it has the brightest screen ever on a smart, with 700 nit (compared to the iPhone 4′s 500 nit).

LG also managed to make the Optimus Black amusingly thin and light. It weighs in at 3.84 ounces (109 grams) and 0.36” (9.2mm) at its thickest, which really raises the bar, considering that it has a large 4″, 480×800 pixel display.

Internal specs for this device aren’t especially innovative, but they’re good enough to put the Optimus Black on par with other major Android models on the market. You’ll find it Android 2.2 out of the box, but LG is promising an early upgrade to Android 2.3 (Honeycomb).

It packs 2 GB storage, 512 MB RAM, and a TI OMAP 1 GHz processor. There are two cameras: the rear 5MP camera with autofocus, and a 2MP front-facing camera for video chatting and self portraits.

One other novel feature is WiFi direct, which allows WiFi enabled devices to communicate with each other directly. This will make things like file transfers and printing much easier to do, so kudos to LG for adding some innovative software to the Optimus Black.

Microsoft Acquires VoIP Giant Skype

One of the worlds biggest companies, Microsoft, recently looked into purchasing the leading VoIP service, Skype, amongst others such as Google, Apple and Facebook. Very early on, $5.8 Billion was offered, and the results are somewhat surprising.

When offered the $5.8 Billion in April, Microsoft was one of the first to make an offer for acquisition of Skype, and there were doubts as to whether or not it would be outdone by other companies who have recently been dominating the market, such as Google, Apple, and even Amazon. In a conference call with reporters, Microsoft’s chief executive, Steve Ballmer, said that Skype is something that Microsoft hopes will reach more people who take use of the variety of it’s products. This could mean possible integration into things like Xbox Live, as well as integration of Windows based phones.

Integrating with Windows phones would allow Microsoft to better compete with big shot companies Google and Apple and with their Google Voice and Facetime. For Xbox, this could mean possible improvements for Microsoft’s Kinect, improving the playability and responsiveness of the system. One only wonders if Skype chat and video chat will thus be integrated into Xbox Live, though currently MSN is integrated into it, yet it seems to have little success.

With the acquisition of Skype, Microsoft will again assert itself as one of the biggest giants in business. If it manages to do well with the new software, it could soar with new features for so many of it’s  new products. While PC/Mac users may not see much of a difference in it’s integration, this acquisition leaves the door wide open for possibilities for devices like Xbox, Windows Phones, and even possibly the Zune which has recently been seeing a decline in sales in the past few years. What happens with next with Microsoft is all only speculation, but it is certainly something very exciting to ponder.

Apple Update the iMac

Over the past few weeks, there's been some speculation about a new 2011 line of iMac's being launched by Apple. That speculation can now come to an end as Apple has indeed launched a new range of iMacs.

Just like the previous generation, there are four different models to choose from with two of them having 21.5 inch screens and two of them having larger 27 inch screens. Each has a faster CPU which is now quad-core for every model. Each has 3x faster graphics power and includes a HD camera to be used with FaceTime. The new Thunderbolt port is also included in the 2011 refresh.

The 2011 iMac range looks very similar to the 2010 models. The screens use an LED backlight and also show the same amount of pixels. The screens are also IPS allowing for a wider viewing angle.

The quad-core processors are said to be up to 70 percent faster than the previous generation of the iMac. The lowest processor is an Intel Core I5 that is included on the basic 21.5 inch model. On the 27 inch models, buyers get a Core i7 chip.

21.5 Inch iMac Specs

The smaller 21.5 inch iMacs come in two options. The first is priced at $1199 and the second at $1499. The differences that bring the price up are the processor which on the lower priced model is a 2.5GHz Core i5 with 6MB on-chip L3 cache. The higher priced model has a 2.7GHz i5 also with the same 6MB of cache.

Both 21.5 inch models come with 4GB of memory on 2x2GB running at 1333MHz (DDR3). Memory can be configured up to 16GB when ordered online.

For storage there's 500GB on the low end model and 1TB on the high end model. The bottom end model cannot be upgraded (or at least Apple doesn't list that possibility), while the upper end model can have up to 2TB of storage on hard drive, or 256GB on SSD if required.

The graphics on the 21.5 inch models are powered by AMD Radeon HD chips with the lower end having a 6750M processor with 512MB of GDDR5. The upper end model has a similar 6770M chip with the same amount of RAM.

If you want the option to upgrade more, go for the higher priced 21.5 inch model as you can change the storage as well as RAM.

27 Inch iMac Specs

The larger 27 inch models also come in two variations with the lower end costing $1699 and the upper end costing $1999 (both base models). On the lower end model you'll find a 2.7GHz Core i5 CPU with 6MB of cache. The upper model has a 3.1GHz Core i5 as standard.

Both models come with a 1TB harddrive as standard which can be upgraded on both models to 2TB or to 256GB SSD just like the upper 21.5 inch model.

The graphics chip on the lower end is the 6770M and on the upper end model, it's the 6970M along with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.

The upper end model is a little more configurable than the other 27 inch model in that you can opt for a faster 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 if desired. A faster graphics card can also be selected if needed with up to 2GB of GDDR5 memory.
