New MacBook Pro for 2011

Apple has unleashed the new MacBook Pro models for 2011 with a ton of upgrades.  All of the MacBook Pro models now feature Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, including the low-end $1199 13″ model. Both 13-inch models get dual core processors as standard equipment, while the 15-inch and 17-inch models sport 2.0GHz to 2.2GHz quad core Intel Core i7 processors in the base configuration.  Speed baby, speed.

However, the biggest buzz feature may be the new Thunderbolt I/O options (aka Intel’s Light Peak), which supports data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps.  The new MacBook Pros still keep the old standard of Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 ports though.

Another changeover is the inclusion of AMD Radeon graphics processors, which Apple cites are up to 3x faster than previous model graphics cards.  Rounding out the top-shelf of new features is FaceTime in HD.  4GB of RAM is standard across the board.

As noted above, the 13-inch models start at $1199, while the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros start at $1799 and $2499, respectively.

Overclock Your CPU For Extreme Speed

Overclock is a way to make a device to run at higher speeds than the provisions of that device makers. The principle is to create higher performance. Overclock usually practiced by users of the PC to force computer peripherals work on the ability of the manufacturer specified standards with the ultimate goal to improve the performance of computer work.

Overclocking
is generally done by gamers for improving computer performance. With a cheap component, then overclocked to achieve equivalent performance to more expensive hardware.

Normally for components in overclock are processors, motherboards, graphics cards and memory. Fortunately now a lot of hardware that was made with fabrication that has been reliable for the purposes of overclocking, so if the insight understanding and experience of overclocking, that damage can be minimized when overclocked.

As for those who do not like the overclock and in their think, overclocking is a dangerous and risk damage to the system of computer. I think that opinion is not entirely true, even I recommend to overclock to get good computer performance.

Some things that support for overclocking:

   1. The process of making processors for various frequencies are all the same. The difference lies in quality and testing on a specific frequency, based on testing temperature, and voltage requirements.
   2. The manufacturer of motherboards and graphics chip gives wide room for overclocking.
   3. Manufacturer of memory providing the flexibility to explore on their products
   4. Diversity of species and forms of conditioning that is destined for the practice of overclocking

Overclocking can be done in various ways, can be mild overclock or hard overclock. How to overclock?

   1. Through BIOS
   2. Voltage and frequency settings done in the BIOS.
   3. Modification of hardware to enable the setting voltage, and frequency multiplier
   4. Using software
   5. Setting the frequency, timing and voltage is done in the operating system.

Unfortunately during this time overclocking is only known by less than 10% of computer users. Actually overclock is not harmful if done correctly and use proper equipment.
According to me, overclocking is a step to seek maximum performance and stability of the system we have. Peripheral supporters are not expensive if you only do mild overclocking. It is safest to overclock without raising any voltage, because if you raise the voltage, the temperature also rises and cooler should also be replaced.

The purpose of overclocking is not looking for highest speed, but to find the highest stable speed of a system. Hardcore overclockers usually spend a lot of money to buy a special peripherals that cost is not affordable for most of the circles. Perform a safe overclock maximization according to your funds.

Overclock will not dificult, only requiring a knowledge, a little precision and courage. For that you need to learn, you can learn through video tutorials, books or e-book about ways to correct overclocking. One of the e-book that gives you knowledge about overclocking is Overclock Your CPU To The Extreme!

Google Translate's New iPhone App

Google has released a Google Translate app for the iPhone that includes a feature that allows you to speak in one language and have the app translate your words into another. I was curious to see how well this worked, so I spent a little bit of time yesterday testing the app. Here’s what I found:
  • The app works well for very short phrases. For anything longer than a few seconds, however, more often than not you either get gibberish or an error message.
  • Perhaps not surprisingly, the speech-to-translate feature works great if you’re speaking English. The app picked up every English phrase I said perfectly.
  • I don’t really speak any other Romance or Germanic languages, so I can’t vouch for how well the app picks up those. I can, however, vouch for the app’s ability to pick up the first line of “Ode to Joy” in German, whether spoken or sung (the remnants of my four-and-a-half years of German classes in high school and college). As for the several other lines of broken and, I’m sure, poorly accented German I threw at the app, the performance was so-so.
  • The real test was how the app performs for a language that’s completely different from English in terms of syntax, pronunciation, and grammar — in this case, Mandarin. I spoke to the app in Mandarin for about 10 minutes, asking and answering various everyday questions. The outcome was very mixed — the translations were surprisingly good for some phrases, but laughably horrible for others (though I must admit that it’s amazing the app picked up as much Mandarin as it did). For instance, when I asked, “What year were you born in?” in Mandarin, the app thought I was asking, “What year did you die in?” because the particular Mandarin phrase I used for “born” sounds somewhat similar to a phrase for “die”.
I’d say that currently the app is much more useful for native English speakers than for people whose first language is something other than English. For instance, if you were traveling in China and needed to find a restroom, you can speak the question into the app in English, and have it ask that question to a passerby in Mandarin. Just don’t expect the app to accurately translate what that passerby tells you. It’s not a universal translator yet.

Motorola Xoom Review and Price

Is Motorola's Xoom being priced not to sell? That's the question a lot of folks are asking as a tipster pointed Engadget to a listing on Best Buy's Web site, showing the upcoming 10.1-inch tablet priced at $1,199.99, with preorders starting in Best Buy stores on February 17.

Over the last few weeks, some reports suggested the Xoom, which has impressive specs and is the first tablet to run Google's Android 3.0 operating system (Honeycomb), would be priced at $800. But for now, anyway, the Best Buy Web site seems to state pretty emphatically that the price is $1,199.99. And to add insult to injury, you also have to activate a month's worth of Verizon data service, though you aren't locked into any sort of contract.

We'll wait to see if that $1,199.99 number sticks. But for those hoping for a strong iPad competitor, that price certainly wouldn't bode well, especially with the iPad 2 just weeks away from being announced.

Update: Some new reports suggest the $1,199.99 is actually "placeholder" pricing and that the Xoom may very well be available for $800 on February 17. Stay tuned.

Update #2: At around 6:30 PM EST on Sunday (2/13), Best Buy shut down the web page with the Xoom's pricing/preorder information on it. In fact, the Xoom appears to have been completely removed from Best Buy's website. We'll let you know when it returns.

AT&T sweetens the iPhone pot with extra minutes

AT&T isn't just getting aggressive with ads to tout the iPhone on its network versus Verizon's, it's giving away minutes as well.

Many current AT&T iPhone users have received text messages from their carrier today thanking them for being loyal customers, and while the text doesn't say so, we're sure it's also a thanks for not switching during Verizon's underwhelming iPhone launch this week.

The text comes with instructions to reply with "yes" to receive 1,000 extra rollover minutes. AT&T tells us these will be applied to each iPhone on the account.

The texts are coming from the number 11113020, and when a user replies with the "yes," another text is received saying that the minutes will be applied in the coming weeks.

With our testing, we found that iPhone users can simply text "yes" to the SMS number and get the deal, though we can't say yet if it applies to all iPhone customers or just those with contracts expiring soon.

So, iPhone-using Crave readers, why not give it a try and tell us back here if it worked for you? Really, it couldn't hurt.

iPhone Attack Reveals Passwords in Six Minutes

Security researchers were able to obtain passwords stored in a locked iPhone without cracking the phone's passcode.
Researchers in Germany say they've been able to reveal passwords stored in a locked iPhone in just six minutes and they did it without cracking the phone's passcode.

The attack, which requires possession of the phone, targets keychain, Apple's password management system. Passwords for networks and corporate information systems can be revealed if an iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen, said the researchers at the state-sponsored Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT).

[ InfoWorld's Galen Gruman lists what the iPad and iPhone still need to do better. | Discover the key Mac, iOS, and Apple tech trends for business users. Read InfoWorld's Technology: Apple newsletter. ]

It is based on existing exploits that provide access to large parts of the iOS file system even if a device is locked.
In a video that demonstrates the attack, the researchers first jailbreak the phone using existing software tools. They then install an SSH server on the iPhone that allows software to be run on the phone.

The third step is to copy a keychain access script to the phone. The script uses system functions already in the phone to access the keychain entries and, as a final step, outputs the account details it discovers to the attacker.

The attack works because the cryptographic key on current iOS devices is based on material available within the device and is independent of the passcode, the researchers said. This means attackers with access to the phone can create the key from the phone in their possession without having to hack the encrypted and secret passcode.

Using the attack, researchers were able to access and decrypt passwords in the keychain, but not passwords in other protection classes.

Among passwords that could be revealed were those for Google Mail as an MS Exchange account, other MS Exchange accounts, LDAP accounts, voicemail, VPN passwords, WiFi passwords and some App passwords. Researchers published a paper with full details of the attack's results.

"As soon as attackers are in the possession of an iPhone or iPad and have removed the device’s SIM card, they can get a hold of e-mail passwords and access codes to corporate VPNs and WLANs as well," said the researchers in a statement. "Control of an e-mail account allows the attacker to acquire even more additional passwords: For many web services such as social networks the attacker only has to request a password reset."

The attack has particular significance for companies that allow employees to use iPhones on corporate networks, because it can reveal network access passwords.

"Owner’s of a lost or stolen iOS device should therefore instantly initiate a change of all stored passwords," said Fraunhofer SIT. "Additionally, this should be also done for accounts not stored on the device but which might have equal or similar passwords, as an attacker might try out revealed passwords against the full list of known accounts."

Researchers at Fraunhofer SIT have previously revealed security problems with other operating systems. In late 2009 they published multiple attack scenarios criminals could use to access files protected by Microsoft's BitLocker disk-encryption technology. Last year the institute began selling a Java phone application for securely storing passwords.

Change Desktop Wallpaper According To Weather Conditions

The other day I shared with you an application that I found which automatically adjusts your Windows 7 Aero Color scheme to reflect the current weather conditions. While this neat little piece of software does a fairly good job at representing the outside weather, nothing conveys the weather better than some extravagant pictures.
While you can get a fairly good idea of the weather using the Aero Color app, I think that “Weather Desktop Background Changer” will do an even better job and let you see it for yourself. It lets you pick a set of custom wallpapers which will automatically be applied depending on the weather conditions of your state or city (sorry it’s US only again)

Not only does it change your wallpaper, but it also displays a weather report in your taskbar. You can also get a look at the weather forecast for the next couple of days as well as current temperature, humidity, and wind speed.

The only draw back I can find with this application is that it doesn’t get the backgrounds automatically for you, I’m afraid you will have to go looking for them yourself and add each one individually. On the plus side this does let you completely customise it to your liking.

Don’t forget to check out our wallpaper gallery where you may find some appropriate wallpapers to go along with this app.

Change Windows 7 Aero Colors According To The Weather

The other day I stumbled across an interesting program called AeroWeather. This little application looks at the temperature and current weather conditions of your city and then plays around with the Windows Aero theme colors to reflect it.

Basically it changes the color of your desktop based on the weather outside. For example if it’s cloudy, your UI will go grey, if it’s sunny, it will be blue and it’ll go white if it’s snowing.

There’s even a night mode were it will dim all the colors when the sun sets and then brightens them up once again when the sun rises.

The application sits silently in your system tray and will work away on its on. Once it’s up and running, all you have to do is take a quick glance at your desktops UI and you’ll have a fairly good idea of the current weather conditions outside, handy if you’re stuck working indoors in an office all day.

The one draw back with this program is it only works if you’re based in the US as you have to enter a zip code for your location so it can gather the information.

You’ll find that you can customise lots of things like the maximum temperature color and the minimum temperature color as well as the color range.

It’s memory footprint is a mere 8mb so you shouldn’t find it slowing down your computer anyway.

ASUS Lamborghini External Hard Drive Price

ASUS has given us some of the best (and some of the worst) portable computing options around.  However, there has been a disturbing trend in the company’s releases as of late:  ASUS is bumping up their price tags!  This latest release, the ASUS Lamborghini External Hard Drive is no exception.
These drives come in two sizes and either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 compatibility (though the USB 2.0 models are the only ones currently available).  Under the hood there’s either a 500 GB drive or a 700 GB drive.  The only other differences are in speed.  The USB 3.0 model runs at 7200 RPM in order to handle the increased data feed from USB 3.0 capable computers while the USB 2.0 model spins at a mere 5400 RPM.

So far, these drives are looking fairly standard, right?  Nothing exceptional but nothing too disappointing.  How about when you consider the USB 2.0 500 GB model comes with a price tag of $120 and the 750 GB model costs $140?  Why ASUS chose to price it’s hard drive double what other drives that size cost is beyond reasoning.  They can’t possibly think that that flashy plastic exterior is seriously going to get people to drop another $60.

I don’t recommend it but if you want to get your hands on one of these drives, head over to the official ASUS website for more information.

Intel says Sandy Bridge chipset design flawed

Intel on Monday said it had stopped shipments of the chipset used with its latest generation of Core processors after it found a design flaw.

The flawed chipset was used in PCs with the next-generation Core processors based on the Sandy Bridge architecture, which were introduced last month at the Consumer Electronics Show. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip, and the design issue has been fixed, Intel said.
While the Core processors remain unaffected, customers who purchased systems with second-generation Core i5 and Core i7 quad-core microprocessors could be affected by the chipset issue, Intel said.

However, Intel said that "consumers can continue to use their systems with confidence" as the chip maker works with partners to deliver a permanent solution. This could include a support chip that resolves the issue.

"The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality," the company said in a statement.

Intel discovered a design issue in the 6-Series chipset, which is code-named Cougar Point and is used in systems with Sandy Bridge processors, which started shipping on Jan. 9. Intel said the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets could degrade over time, which could impact performance or functionality of storage devices such as hard drives.

A symptom of a faulty chipset could be bit-rate errors during data transfers, said Steve Smith, Intel vice president and director of PC client operations and enabling, during a conference call.

It's unlikely that PCs would experience failures immediately, but aggressive data transfers over time could cause more errors, Smith said. For Intel, the best course of action was to fix the problem as quickly as possible before the chipset started shipping in mainstream PCs.

There have been no returns so far related to the chipset and company officials said relatively few customers have been affected. The chipset was shipping in a few PCs with quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 chips.

The chipset originally passed testing and qualification internally and through tests by PC makers, Smith said. The problem was identified on Sunday after Intel got a better understanding of circuit-level issues related to temperature, voltage and time degradation.

The company is continuing to ship Sandy Bridge processors, while the 6-Series chipset has been put on hold, Smith said.

But the chipset and Sandy Bridge processors are paired in many PCs, so the chipset halt could indirectly affect Sandy Bridge volumes, Intel officials acknowledged.

End-user laptops with dual-core Sandy Bridge chips were expected to launch in a few weeks and Smith said those launches may be delayed.

The second-generation Core processors based on the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture include a number of improvements over their predecessor. The new Core processors for the first time integrate a CPU and graphics processor on one chip, which helps deliver better graphics and application performance.

The design problem is expected to reduce revenue by about $300 million for the first quarter of 2011 as Intel discontinues production and starts manufacturing the modified chipset. Intel said that full-year revenue is not expected to be materially affected by the issue.

This is a big hit for Intel, which is known for flawless chip designs and was pinning hopes on Sandy Bridge chips to deliver close to a third of the revenue during fiscal 2011.
